Here’s what happened to the cast who played Leisl, Freidrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl.
Charmian Carr – Liesl
Leisl is the oldest of the Von Trapp’s and is well remembered for the song Sixteen Going On Seventeen and her unfortunate crush on a Nazi soldier.
She was played by Charmian Carr, who had never actually acted before The Sound Of Music – not bad for a first gig.
Carr pushed past established actors for the role including Mia Farrow, Teri Garr and Patty Duke.
After the film she retired from acting, married a dentist and had two kids.
She wrote two Sound of Music-related books, Forever Liesl and Letters to Liesl.
Sadly the child star died in 2016 from complications related to dementia.
Nicholas Hammond – Friedrich
Friedrich was the feisty child.
Nicholas Hammond who played the role, had already begun his career on Broadway before being cast and continued to land great roles after The Sound of Music.
After the career-defining role, he had an infamous stint on the beloved The Brady Bunch as the jock who breaks Marcia’s nose.
He went on to star as Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the ’70s television series The Amazing Spider-Man.
Hammond later moved to Australia where he has lived in Sydney ever since, with Aussie actress Robyn Nevin.
He’s starred in various Australian films and TV shows, and had a role in 2019 Tarantino film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Heather Menzies-Urich – Louisa
Heather Menzies-Urich went into the role of Louisa as another young actress who was cast with no prior experience.
She wowed audiences with her wonderful a capella singing voice, and went on star in a number of musical shows.
She did a Playboy spread in 1973 titled “Tender Trapp”.
She married Vegas star Robert Urich and died in 2017 of brain cancer, just after her 68th birthday.
Duane Chase – Kurt
After playing Kurt in The Sound of Music, Duane Chase went back to high school.
After graduating, he joined the US Forest Service and studied geology.
He still does wildlife and forestry work, and is married to a nurse from Germany.
Angela Cartwright – Brigitta
One of the middle kids, Brigitta was played by Angela Cartwright.
Cartwright, 68, is a British-born actress who already had plenty of acting work under her belt.
She played Paul Newman’s daughter as a three-year-old in Somebody Up There Likes Me.
She went on to star in the TV series Lost in Space and the 1970s series Make Room for Granddaddy. Her sister is Veronica Cartwright, an actress known for roles in Alien, ER and The X-Files.
Debbie Turner – Marta
Shortly after playing Marta, Debbie Turner decided acting wasn’t for her.
She went back to school, and stayed out of show business, but regularly does appearances with the rest of the former Von Trapps.
What’s more she followed in the footsteps of the Von Trapps and has a big family herself; the star has four daughters.
Kym Karath – Gretl
Gretl is the baby of the family.
The character was played by Kym Karath, who began acting at age three opposite Henry Fonda in Spencer’s Mountain.
Now 62, she describes herself as an actor and writer in her Twitter bio.
During filming The Sound Of Music, she nearly died by drowning while they filmed the scene where their boat capsized as she couldn’t swim.
